Summary:
Plot:
Junpei continues to sit and talk to Mahito in his hidden lair beneath Kawasaki City. The young boy tells Mahita that he cannot believe that indifference is the opposite of hate. Both agree that people excuse themselves with complicated simple answers. Mahito shows Junpei a giant hand-sized deformed human that was used as an experiment for Mahito to test how big and small he could make people.
Mahito asks his guest why he feels comfortable among corpses despite being human. Seemingly angry, Junpei says that he would only be angry if it was someone he cared about. He expects cruelty from people and believes that his indifference is what all people should strive for. Mahito claims that Junpei’s indifference to other people is simply his own way of getting revenge on his foolish race.
Mahito explains that humans have a soul separate from the heart, and that’s where emotions come from. He sees the souls of people and claims that they do not affect him because other lives have no value. Mahito agrees with Junpei that life goes on without meaning, but tells the young man to live the way he wants. Mahito supports Junpei’s way of thinking and tells him not to settle for mere indifference.
Meanwhile, Yuji meets with Nanami and Ijichi to discuss the disappearances and disfigurement deaths across Kawasaki. Using the information gained from the Windows encounter with the culprit’s remains, they are able to triangulate the location of the criminal’s hideout. Yuji is ready to move out, but Nanami doesn’t want him to act on the approximation. Instead, he tells Yuji to find another witness: Junpei Yoshino.
There is not enough information to suggest that Junpei is a “curse user”, an evil version of a jujutsu wizard. However, his connection to the victims must be investigated by Yuji. Nanami trusts Ijichi to take care of Yuji, but he knows that their information is more than just approximations. While Yuji left the room, Nanami tells Ijichi that the culprit is deliberately leading the wizards to their hideout. He decides not to hurt Yuji and says he will go alone. Yuji re-enters the room and tells Nanami sensei to be careful. Nanami tells him to address him as teacher, but Yuji can’t help it.
Ijichi drives Yuji around until they find Junpei walking in public. They decide to use Fly Heads, small curses, to test Junpei’s sensitivity to cursed spirits. If he doesn’t see them and is attacked, Yuji is supposed to save him. If he sees them and runs away, Yuji must rescue him and bring him in for questioning. In the third scenario, if Junpei fights with jujutsu, he will be immediately arrested. At worst, Yuji has to retreat if Junpei is threatened with a rank 2 or higher. Ijichi reminds Yuji that he cannot accept missions above his assigned level.
Elsewhere under the city in Mahito’s hideout, Nanami defeats a number of former humans who have become curses. He tells Mahito to hurry up and reveal himself because Nanami doesn’t enjoy killing people. Mahito appears and claims to be excited that Gojo didn’t show up. He adds that he needs someone strong enough to experiment with, and Nanami is the perfect subject. Annoyed, Nanami tells Mahita that he needs to finish it quickly as he also doesn’t like working overtime.
