Summary:
Defeated and bleeding, both Maki and Mai were seriously injured and left for dead by their father. Luckily, Mai is conscious and she always thought it would happen one day. Mai understands that in jujutsu she and Maki are one and the same, and must make a drastic decision to ensure that her beloved twin lives on.
Plot:
Ogi drags the bleeding bodies of his twin daughters down a corridor to an unmarked room with a large opening. After dismembering them himself, Ogi thoughtlessly leaves a trail of their blood behind as he explains his victory.
Maki lost to her father because she got close and treated her opponent like a swordsman and not a wizard. Ogi believes that he should not be judged by those who are not good, and considers Maki completely worthless. He reiterates that he did not become clan head because of the quality of his children. Naobit’s projection sorcery technique doesn’t have much of a history other than being passed down by Naoye, so that wasn’t a determining factor. The only difference between them was how strong their children turned out to be.
Ogi tells his daughters that children must not delay their parents and throws them down the stairs into the great room. He explains that this area is for training and discipline. Countless rank 2 and lower cursed spirits are kept there, and they will eat the twins once Ogi leaves. He mocks Maki, saying that her Heavenly Limitation is nothing special compared to other wizards who train and strengthen their muscles with cursed energy every day. The father turns his back on his daughters and bids a final farewell to the stains on his life.
Before the curses start, Mai manages to sit up and rests her head on Maki’s lap before she feels a heartbeat. She feels Maki’s heart beating miraculously and notes how hard her twin is. Mai had a hunch that this would happen one day, and she’s ready to do whatever it takes. She opens Maki’s mouth and says it sucks before she breathes into it, reviving her sister.
Maki breathes new life and wakes up in a dreamlike space somewhere on a beach, as if she’s been saved from drowning. He lies next to Mai, who explains that she will use her construction technique to make something and then die from her injuries. Mai gets up from the sand and goes into the water as she says goodbye and wishes her twin good luck.
This greatly confuses Maki, who gets up and tries to follow Mai, begging her sister to come back. Mai explains that she knew for a while that twins were a bad sign for wizards. To receive one must give, and so suffering strengthened them both. However, this rule does not apply to twins, as jujutsu treats them as one individual. Even if Maki wanted to get stronger, she can’t because Mai doesn’t and Mai has a cursed technique. As long as Mai is around, Maki cannot fully develop.
Maki says she understands, so Mai stops walking away. Not wanting to lose his sister, he runs after Mai into the water, asking her to come back again. Mai holds out her hand to leave just one thing and tells Maki to throw the rest away. Mai takes all the cursed energy between them with her as she dies. In return, she asks Maki to promise her one thing: to “destroy everything”. Maki takes the small cane from her sister’s hand and thinks of them as little children, momentarily bringing them back to being happy little girls again.
In the next moment, Maki snaps back to reality and notices that instead of a reed, she is holding a sword hilt. She is in the arms of her sister who has tragically rolled over with no life left in her body. Overwhelmed with guilt and grief, Maki cries and tells Mai to wake up as cursed spirits approach them from all sides. As Ogi walks away, he notices that something is wrong and turns around in concern. All of the cursed spirits are suddenly banished, confusing Ogi as their presence fades. She prepares her katana and in the shadow of the door she sees Maki gently laying down Mai’s body.
Ogi’s body remembers a certain fear that his mind tried long and hard to forget. Maki emerges from the shadows, reminding him of none other than the only other warrior who has no cursed energy, Toji Zenin. A jolt of fear made Ogi’s eyes open wide and he began to sweat. He immediately activates his innate Blazing Courage technique and covers the broken blade of his katana with searing flames that burn around him.
Ogi, with a searing blade pointed at Maki, threatens to burn his worthless child to the bone in a life-and-death fight, but Maki effortlessly slices his head in half as he walks past him so fast he didn’t even see him coming. Maki stops after her father’s defeated body falls to the ground dead. She looks at the last gift Mai gave her and remembers the birds flying over the beach. Ready to fulfill her promise, Maki takes the cursed instrument in her hand and tells Mai it’s time to begin.
