Summary:
Yuji and Megumi enter Tokyo Colony No. 1 together, but before long, they are unexpectedly separated. Both are involuntarily transported to distant locations and targeted as rookies in The Culling Game.
Plot:
Inside Tokyo Colony No. 1, a woman with an aviator and walkie-talkie named Hanyu stands atop a skyscraper overlooking the city.
Hanyu asks for a signal from someone named Rin Amai, a boy she forces to work for her. He replies that he can’t do anything if no one shows up, which irritates Hanyu. She expresses that she is upset by his answer and Rin freaks out and immediately apologizes. Hanyu activates his cursed technique, shaping her hair into the back of a jet plane and threatening to run Rin over if she shuts up.
Outside the colony, Yuji and Megumi approach the barrier and she says to beware of incarnated wizards from past eras. Yuji acts like he agrees, but then immediately asks Megumi to do it again for him. Megumi realizes that Yuji doesn’t understand at all and agrees to explain.
Some players are from thousands of years ago and even those from just a hundred years ago have a completely different mindset than people today. As wizards, they valued life differently, and fighting for life and death was a common thing for them. Some people even desired to achieve an honorable end in battle, and Megumi thinks that may be why they agreed to become players. Megumi doesn’t believe they’ll be able to negotiate with the past wizards, and Yuji points out that they have to be wary of cursed spirits as well, especially at night. Megumi hopes that a modern wizard caught up in the game like Tsumiki will be happy to talk.
They knock on the barrier to Tokyo Colony #1 and Kogane appears to greet them. Kogane announces that a Culling Game is taking place inside and anyone who logs in will become a player in the deadly competition. Megumi declares her participation and refuses to review the rules with Kogan. Determined to save her sister, Megumi reminds Yuji that their first step is to get information on Hiromi Higuruma.
The pair enter the barrier and are suddenly separated, sent to different places, far apart. Falling from the sky, Yuji is confused by his circumstances while wondering where Megumi is. When the player enters the game barrier, they are transported to one of nine locations. Some individuals place themselves in these places to take advantage of newcomers who are disoriented by circumstances not mentioned in the rules. Rin notices Yuji falling from the sky and plays her part by signaling Hanyu with a homing light baton.
Hanyu uses her cursed technique to propel herself and fly at high speed, crashing straight into Yuji. It smashes through two buildings straight away – an attack that would crush most players. However, Yuji is unharmed and quickly recovers from the impact, surprising Hanyu. Yuji manages to get to his feet by landing on a building and taking his fighting stance.
Hanyu recognizes the toughness of his opponent and calls his partner to his side. Yuji quickly throws a rock that hits Hanyu in the lower abdomen. She is seriously injured and realizes that Yuji has grabbed the debris from the buildings he broke through and charged it with cursed energy. Badly injured, Hanyu loses height and falls into the building below.
Yuji is surprised at how easily his opponent was defeated. He still needs to ask about Higuruma and find Megumi. Hanyu’s partner, Haba, uses his cursed helicopter-like technique to levitate behind Yuji. Angered, he demands to know what Yuji did to his wife. Yuji faces his new adversary and decides to ask him about Higuruma instead. Rin notices that Haba has gotten engaged and that Hanyu has fallen. He thinks about the new players for a second and realizes that they are familiar before he remembers that his name is Itadori.
Meanwhile, Megumi knocks the female player to the ground with a cursed tool drawn. She asks him why he did it and he angrily replies because she attacked him. He complains that he split up, but he said goodbye to Yuji and even Nue couldn’t find him. This is because the colony is much bigger than Shibuya and the boys are now maybe over two kilometers apart. Regardless, they both still know what to look for.
Megumi asks the girl for information about Higuruma, but she acts deliberately difficult. She says she will only give him the information if he acts as her knight and protects her. Megumi reluctantly agrees, but not in the playful way she’d like. He tells her to go ahead and promises to protect her only if she tells the truth. Otherwise, it implies a penalty for which he gets points. Unlike Yuji, Megumi has no qualms about scoring a hundred points herself if necessary. Undaunted, the girl replies with a smirk and tells Megumi to call her Remi.
